The things people keep repeating about sending money to India — and what's really going on behind each one.
"Zero fee always means the cheapest transfer."
FactZero-fee providers make it back on a wider FX margin. On HKD 10,000, a "zero fee" provider with a 0.8% margin sends about ₹970 less than a provider charging HK$42 but with a 0.5% margin. Always compare the actual INR you receive, not the fee.
"My HK bank gives me the best rate because I'm a loyal customer."
FactHK banks typically add 1.5–2.5% to the mid-market rate. Wise and Instarem add 0.1–0.6%. Your "relationship" advantage is in service and documentation handling, not pricing. For large or complex transfers, that's genuinely worth it. For routine amounts, you're overpaying.
"Interest on an NRE account is taxable in India."
FactNRE interest is fully tax-free in India as long as you maintain NRI status. The confusion comes from NRO accounts, where interest is taxable with TDS. If you're earning in HK and sending savings home, NRE is almost always the right landing account.
"I need RBI approval to send money home."
FactFor personal remittances, there's no approval needed — your HK provider and the receiving Indian bank handle the compliance (RBI purpose codes, FEMA reporting) in the background. RBI only comes into play for very large or unusual transactions.
"Instant transfer means my recipient has the money instantly."
Fact"Instant" refers to IMPS, the Indian payment rail — which is instant. But FX conversion and HK-side cutoffs add hours. A Friday-evening HKD transfer typically won't convert until Monday morning HKT. True instant = FPS on weekday mornings only.
"Comparison sites mark up prices to earn commission."
FactAffiliate commissions come from the provider's own marketing budget — you pay the same rate whether you go direct or through a comparison link. The commission is their customer acquisition cost, not an added fee on you. (nriremit discloses which rows are affiliate-linked in each card's footer.)
"Once I pick a provider, it stays the cheapest forever."
FactFintech FX margins shift weekly as providers compete for market share. The "best" provider for HKD 10,000 today may not be the best for HKD 50,000, or next month, or for a weekend transfer. Comparison takes 60 seconds. Loyalty costs more.
"If my salary bank in HK is HSBC, I must send via HSBC."
FactYou can fund any fintech (Wise, Instarem, etc.) from your HSBC account via FPS — it takes seconds and costs nothing on the HK side. You're not locked in. The salary bank is your source of funds; the remittance provider is a separate decision.
